Dragons, or Wyrems, are magical creatures with vast amounts of power. There are several types of dragons, with three main classes of dragon. The most common of which are Chromatic Dragons and Metallic Dragons. The next largest classification is Gem Dragons. While more advanced species of draconic nature exist, they are exceedingly rare and few texts studying their nature exist. Dragons typically have a name which connotates their type. Dragons typically have a Breath Weapon which denotes their elemental affinity, this also defines their natural flair for magic, but all dragons are notably gifted magic casters for any school of magic.

Biology

Dragons are not all reptilian-looking in nature, the notable example being Chromatic Dragons do not have scales, instead their thick hide and feathers protect them from harm. It is then important to note that all dragons are endothermic creatures, and have no natural way of shedding temperature changes without the help of magic, or an organ known as The Dracervicis which typically lines their long neck.

Dragons typically lay very few eggs at a time, and often many are not fertalized by a suitable mate. While many adventurers and creatures may become enthralled by a dragon, it is particularly difficult for a dragon to cross-breed with another race without the help of seriously advanced magics.

While varying on species, Wyrem senses are often superior to other creatures. These acute senses only improve as they age. It is not known if a Dragon can die from old age, as typically the more powerful they become the more likely it is that lesser dragons will band together and kill their elder and split the spoils of their Hoard.

History

Dragons have existed long before Before The Shattering. The God Vivaldo H Ossini magically created the first Metallic Dragons from the metals of Naouk. Later developing more interesting creations that have survived to this day, such as the feathered Chromatic Dragons and the psionic Gem Dragons.

Since The Shattering, dragons have been forced to adapt to a world assailed by extraplanar threats. In the early years dragons were especially sought after as serious opponents to test an invaders strength. Celestials and Demons came seeking to test their power, enslave the magical creatures, or cut them into useful tools. Since then, dragons have become more territorial and cautious. Many now guard sites of planar convergence as a threat at the gate that they might invade and wreak havoc on those unfortunate to get on their bad side.

Wyrem Magic

Wyrems are born with an intrinsic link to magic. This connection is biological, instinctual, and very elemental. A dragon’s Breath Weapon is the most visible expression of this link. Their language, Draconic, is often used in texts and spell scrolls to inform a wizard of how a spell might work.

Dragons do not need to learn magic as most mortals do, they awaken it in themselves as they grow in age and power. Their control over their elemental nature matures, and surpases the potency of archmages without formal study. Notably, The Dracervicis is a conduit to their power, and also a vent for their energy. Dragons also have created two of the notable races through magical experimentation. One being the dreaded Dragonborn and the other the simple Kobold.

Dragonborn

An intentional creation by Furzhold M Groust they are created as humanoid versions of the dragon species. First created as soldiers for The Scale War they are few in number now, especially due to their outlawed nature in most cities and towns. Dragonborn share the same naming title as the color of dragon they hail from, however lowercase to denote their humanoid status.

Kobold

An accidental side-effect of the creation of Dragonborn is their smaller variation the Kobold. Kobolds are smaller creatures than Dragonborn, but more draconic in nature. While generally simple-minded, their intelligence should not be overlooked as they were a critical part of killing The Featered Fealty which earned them respect from the other races, and a family known as Ikot a position of nobility in Diveneu.
